General Training Courses for Portable CMM:
- Basic Trainig Course - Introductory
This introductory course is designed for companies that have recently rented or purchased a
portable CMM, or have hired new operators for their equipment. The course covers the
fundamentals of portable CMMs including: setup, calibration and handling, basic measurement,
alignment, analysis, and reporting functions. Trainies should be familiar with metrology, and must
have a working knowledge of PCs and Windows.
This course covers advanced portable CMM operation topics that are not covered in the Basic
training course. It is also intended to address specific gaps in the customer's understanding of
their system. As such, content is typically dictated by the interest and needs of the trainee. This
is a perfect refresher course for anyone with basic working knowledge of portable CMMs. Trainees
should have at least taken the Basic training course.
This course is designed for customers that are upgrading their hardware and/or software, and
need to be brought up to speed very quickly on the operational differences of their new system.
This program is ideal for customers that want to evauate an upgrade before committing to a
purchase. Trainees should have a thorough understanding of their current system.
- Implementation Training Course
This comprehensive course is aimed at new and moderately experienced users, and is designed to
achieve maximum operator productivity in minimum time through total immersion in the use of the
system. Starting with the Basic training course to give the trainees a soloid footing, the course
follows up with on-the-job training to give them reinforcement and make them immediately
productive. Prerequisites are similar to the Basic training course. The customer should also identify
specific application or project to maximize the effectiveness of the on-the-job training.
- Operator Qualification Course
Northwest Metrology can design a course of instruction tailored to the needs and processes of
your business, to help train your operators and certify their ability to successfully operate your
portable CMMs in your environment. Observing your operators' progress through the program will
allow you to determine when they are qualified to perform measurement tasks of varying
complexity.
Application Specific Training:
This course is designed to teach tool builders how to use Portable CMMs to fabricate tooling and
assembly fixtures, or to assemble production parts on flexible assembly fixtures. The course
focuses on the use of specific software functionality, combined with real-time 3D position
feedback, to set details and critical assemblies in a ccordinate system. Trainees should have
already taken at least th Basic training course, and must have a solid understanding of tool
fabrication techniques.
Trainees are shown how to use Portable CMMs to digitize exemplar parts to create engineering
data such as CAD files in order to archive or replicate parts. This course focuses on measurement
process and software functionality. Trainees should have taken at least the Basic training course.
This course is designed to teach trainees how to inspect parts that are dimentioned using GD&T
callouts. The focus of the course is an understanding of GD&T. Metrology hardware and software
are discussed as they relate to the inspection process. GD&T is not available with all metrology
software programs. General instruction in the fundamentals of GD&T without consideration of a
specific measuring system is available...Call for details.

The length and detailed content of any training program depends significantly on the background and motivation of the trainees, the hardware and software the instruction covers, and the primary application for the equipment.
